Terrence Howard in Hustle and Flow

Terrence Howard got his first Oscar Nomination as D Jay in Hustle and Flow.

Howard plays D Jay , a pimp that wants to change his life and does it threw Rap Music. I honestly use to shake my head at this performance when I first saw and it mostly has to do with more of the fact that some people and some critics actually picked him for their personal win on top of me just thinking how awful I thought his performance was and me not even caring about him as an actor.

Well after re watching Hustle and Flow I will give my honesty and fairness of what I think.

After taking aside my past view and bias aside , I tried to be as open minded to see what people think was so great about his performance and will list the good and the bad.  Well most people that do love this performance say it is because he had the most interesting changes in his character and as even film critic Roger Ebert said he thought the changes he went through made him the most complex out of the Best Actor nominees. Okay fair? Well after really overlooking it I must admit he does , but on paper but the D Jay we got in Hustle and Flow was playing this character yet he was not playing it as one would think and it is do to Howard's performance.

The D Jay I  saw was a little bit of the D Jay as written yet more over the top and uneven ... Sometimes he was just flat annoying and it had a lot to do with his dialogue , every other word out of his mouth is MAYNE which is supposed to be MAN and sometimes when needs to show emotion or anger it you just do not feel it from him like you should and those are  Howard's biggest problems ...

On the other hand I will give him some credit, the rapping he does in his film is really from him and there are 2 scenes where he is pretty good in. The first being his opening scene and the second is his whole scene with Skinny black  , this scene is actually a little touching and he actually seem to be playing him the way D Jay should be. I do not hate it as much as I use to but as great as it seems to some it really is uneven do to Howard.

  1. I thought he was both dull and some how overacting here. He just never did much of anything for me, and I have always found Roger Ebert's tastes in performances somewhat questionable. He was better in Crash, although I would not nominate for that either.

He was apparently the surprise nominee which is a shame as the probable sixth and seventh place performances of Russell Crowe and Ralph Fiennes were much better. Although of course how Viggo Mortensen was forgotten basically the entire season is a true head scratcher.

  2. I agree he was better in Crash which In my opinionis his best performance lol. This performance is just uneven and weird and it has nothing to do with his character.
